The growth of the ebike market continues, and the sales boom in 2020 corresponds to an increase of 52% compared to 2019, that is, a turnover of 10.6 billion euros.
These are very positive figures for this sector which, as Manuel Marsilio, general director of Conebi (Confederation of the European Bicycle Industry) points out, ” is becoming the preferred option for consumers “.
For this reason, European citizens are more in favor of buying an electric bicycle with assisted pedaling, probably because the options of the population opt for forms of electric mobility that are more respectful of the environment than those that use fossil fuels.
The 52% increase in sales in the electric bicycle market is not the only interesting fact. If you go deeper and analyze the data of the sector, you can see that around 80% of bicycles are Made in Europe.
Growth of ebike sales in Europe in 2020.
As mentioned above, the growth of ebike sales on the European continent is +52% in 2020 compared to 2019.
The value of the electric bike market has skyrocketed to 10.6 billion, which is even more impressive when you consider that 22 million bikes were sold in 2020, for a total value of 18.3 billion (+40%). compared to 2019).
This is an all-time high in the last 20 years.
Alongside this incredible e-boom in sales of electric bicycles, something has also changed…
First of all, what stands out is the Made in Europe. Of the 4.5 million electric bikes sold in the European Union and the UK, some 3.6 million were produced on the continent, so in percentage terms this means that 80% of ebikes are produced in the EU. .
This has also been achieved thanks to new national policies and consumer choices, which have influenced and changed the market, leading several manufacturers to locate their production on European soil.
This change has made it possible to increase the capital invested in this sector and employment, which according to Conebi data has risen by +30% compared to 2019.
Today there are more than 1,000 sustainable manufacturing SMEs in Europe, employing 155,000 people, directly or indirectly linked to production.
If we also consider cycle tourism, logistics services, bike sharing and the entire retail sector, there are more than 850,000 jobs.
A quick calculation shows that for every 1,000 bicycles produced in Europe between three and five jobs are created per year, while for every 1,000 eBikes between six and nine are created.
Unprecedented growth in production across Europe.
Erhard Büchel, President of Conebi
In fact, investments in 2020 have exceeded 1,500 million euros (in 2019 the total investment was 1,000 million euros) and if this trend continues, the entire cycling sector will probably see an increase not only in sales, but also in the production, services and everything that revolves around the world of bicycles.
